From the foreword:

"The involvement of humankind in ensuring the sustainable supply of wood is not only a matter of survival, but also of cultural significance.

The late Dr Hans Merensky, one of South Africa’s foremost mining geologists, grew up in Germany, where he was introduced to a culture of forest conservation—a value he continued to uphold on his farm Westfalia, near Duivelskloof in South Africa.

The Hans Merensky Foundation supports research aimed at improving forestry and wood utilisation across Southern Africa. This is achieved through internal research initiatives and by supporting external research bodies.

In addition, we actively participate in treelot plantings—not only as a renewable source of energy, but also to help conserve indigenous tree species unique to specific areas.

Wood carving, both as an art and a craft, is a globally practiced form of expression. Since launching the Hans Merensky Sculpture Exhibitions in 1985, we have proudly supported artists who work with wood by providing them with a platform to showcase their talent.

We believe that a deeper awareness of trees and wood should become a shared cultural value among all South Africans."
