The publication of this volume, which combines essays written in English and Afrikaans, stands to coincide with the artist's 70th birthday in March 1999.
"This book has various aims. It is firstly intended to pay tribute to one of South Africa's most talented artists. At the same time, it joins the voices acknowledging his pioneering work in the visual arts in South Africa and abroad. Christo Coetzee's name and achievements have been directly linked, since the 1950s, to avant-garde movements in Paris and elsewhere abroad – movements such as 'Art Informel', 'Assemblage' art, and 'Neo-Baroque'. Furthermore, since the 1960s, his work has formed an important part of the artistic vanguard in the country of his birth as a consequence of regular exhibitions and reviews."
