Edited by Andrew Lamprecht and Ivor Powell, TERRA offers a comprehensive companion to artist Jeanette Unite’s preoccupations and practice.

From the editors:

“The book you hold in your hands was born out of two decades of research by Jeanette Unite into the industrial landscape of South Africa – historic, scientific, material, and most importantly, artistic. The art Unite produced from these explorations is inextricable from the impact mining wrought on South African history. We would live in a vastly different country – and indeed a different world – were it not for the epochal discovery of diamonds, gold and other mineral deposits in the second half of the nineteenth century and the concomitant and sometimes tragic effect of these discoveries.”

In addition to full-colour reproductions of Jeanette Unite’s work, alongside photographs from her studio and field trips, TERRA includes peer-reviewed essays by Kathryn Smith, Kim Gurney, Andrew Lamprecht, Ivor Powell, Ashraf Jamal, Marian Tredoux, Melvyn Minnaar, Chris Roper, Bongani Ndodana Breen, and an introductory statement by the artist.

Transcribing both the historical and present predicament of mining, Jeanette Unite (b.1964) works from a paintbox of oxides, metal salts and industrial residue, creating paints, pastels and glass tints for her large-scale artworks that reflect on geological deeptime and the socio-political implications of mineral extraction. She lives and works in Cape Town.
