Katharien De Villiers’ art practice bridges collage, painting and installation and deals mainly with issues of memory, community, and personal experience. An important aspect of De Villiers’ work is the personal experience. Being born and bred in Cape Town, most of her memories come from that city – but in her practice there is an ongoing conscious awareness of her own position as a white Afrikaans woman, and the role that that plays within any society and space she finds herself in.

She is continuously aware of the wastage and fragments that come from her work, and this was the initial prompt for the creation of Dog, which is made from offcut pieces of wood in the artist’s studio.

80 x 60 cm | wood and paint | varied edition of 8
