From the author:
“An overwhelming majority of my favourite South African plays, by Black Playwrights or Black Theatre Makers, exist exclusively in the minds and bodies of the companies that have mounted those particular works. And, if met with some fortune, at times, they can be found in the crumpled up makeshift-scripts-library of a performer or stage manager who saves their texts or cue sheets in a memory vault of sorts – a scrapbook of nostalgia. If you are even luckier, there is a filmed archive of the performance kuphi-kuphi, which often, rather sadly, the ‘producing’ theatre owns. Seldom, however, is there an ISBN number!
The Black South African Playwright does not Publish, and I, J. Bobs Tshabalala, am part of that disgraceful narrative. This here book, and its official publication, is a leap for me outside of this unfavourable state of affairs. Here I am, playing my part in occupying shelf space somewhere in the libraries that do so poorly to adequately represent our voices. I am here, to offer this work, for it to be read, performed, directed, translated, adapted, questioned, reimagined, challenged, and to even be used as a provocation for new ideas and to be cited as my first offer of a period piece for an era that I actually lived in.”
