Exceprt from book:

William Eggleston is not a stranger to Munich. Eggleston's photographs were first exhibited in the city as early as 1978, when curator Klaus-Jürgen Sembach presented them as part of the group exhibition American Landscapes. Sembach, who acquired several of Eggleston's photographs for the Neue Sammlung three decades ago, was the first curator to buy works by this artist for a European collection. Since then, the Neue Sammlung (formerly the Museum of Applied Arts) has been incorporated within the Pinakothek der Moderne, an institution whose collection has, since 2003, included Eggleston's portfolio Troubled Waters (1980) as part of a permanent loan from the Siemens Photography Collection. In addition to this important loan, the museum has made further acquisitions to expand its photography collection. The most recent significant exhibition of Eggleston's work in Germany occurred in 2003, when Thomas Weski presented Eggleston's series Los Alamos, photographs from the late sixties and early seventies, at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. However, while it can be said that fine art photography has arrived in German art museums, as of yet only a handful of institutions are making regular contributions in this field.
