Self-taught ceramic jewellery designer Githan Coopoo’s first foray into object-making was through their collection Love and Sex. Coopoo describes the collection to online publication Two Point Oh as follows: “This series is made up of palm sized tiles that are decorated with various images of posed men and text. The men are predominantly nude or semi nude and come from the internet. Some images are of and from men I know, some are not. Most allude to a phone or phone camera.”
The artist’s homoerotic work is a reflection on queer male culture and its intersection with the internet and technology. The subjects are both real and fictional; the captions on the top of the tile, which are usually unrelated, are quotes from those closest to the artist, and words that have brought them solace.
South African ceramicist Githan Coopoo graduated with a BA in English and Art history from the University of Cape Town in 2016. They worked as an assistant curator of costume at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art before becoming a full-time visual artist.
