An assemblage of paper, paint and tape on balsa wood, upgrade shimmers like a deconstructed disco ball; carefully painted over in parts so that the mass of shiny tape forms a topographical landscape. The work straddles the boundary between organic and man-made, simultaneously appearing as something reclaimed by nature and something metallic, plastic, hard and shiny. Galia Gluckman’s use of everyday materials to create this effect speak to her proficiency in making work that reference the world around us whilst remaining ambiguous. This work uses the same materials and approach as work she produced for her 2020 show at SMAC Stellenbosch, which dealt with idea of the party in the time of COVID-19.

Galia Gluckman (b. 1973, Tel Aviv) is an artist living and working in Cape Town. Originally qualifying as a fashion designer, Gluckman previously worked between London and New York before returning to her contemporary art practice. Her most recent work is concerned with the metaphor of the party to trigger reflection: works made up of tinsel, ribbon and rope allude to self-protection as well as invitation. Though non-figurative, Gluckman’s work belies an eye for fine detail and the subtleties of relationships between bodies in space - a concern that becomes increasingly relevant during the pandemic.
