“Fragmentation and breaking are at the core of my practice,” Githan Coopoo writes of his ceramic work. “As a natural intervention, I rely on this process to extend my sight beyond my own limitations. From my studio, I offer these made fragments in their truest form – thoughts, musings, things I’ve heard and read that form part of a larger, more significant whole. Both the physicality of each piece and its meaning sit in a state of incompleteness.” Here, two tile pieces find companionship in a frame, set against a shared blue background. Both pair text and image to evoke a narrative of uncertain characters and indistinct pronouns – ‘you’ and ‘I’ gesturing less to specific people than to imagined interlocutors.

Artist and jewellery designer Githan Coopoo works in clay to create unique pieces of poetic import. “I find clay to be a medium that is both uncomplicated and universally timeless. I hope my pieces bring a subtle sense of self-awareness to the wearer — an almost grounding sensation. To adorn the body with a fragile ornament is to make a commitment to sensibility and sensitivity — both powerful and beautiful practices.” Githan graduated from the UCT in 2017 with degrees in English and Art History. He lives and works in Cape Town.
