In there is no such thing as nothing, Galia Gluckman uses incongruous materials like shredded paper and pipe cleaners to create an object that resists category. The variety of textures combine to create a surface that most closely resembles hair, or the fur of an animal: the amorphous form interrupted by a shiny bell and horn-like protrusion. The work’s ambiguity allows for many meanings and resists definition (indeed, there may be no such thing). The work follows closely on a similar series made for Galia's exhibition at SMAC Stellenbosch in 2020.

Originally a fashion designer, Galia previously worked between London and New York before returning to Cape Town to pursue her contemporary art practice. Made from tinsel, ribbon and brightly coloured rope, her most recent work explores the party as metaphor. Though non-figurative, Gluckman’s work belies an eye for fine detail and the subtleties of relationships between bodies in space – a concern that has since become increasingly relevant during the pandemic moment.
