In Studio of No Idea, Guy Simpson offers a pseudo-architectural view of his studio, barren of ideas and works-in-progress; an alternative look at artistic practice that acknowledges the difficulty of always making. Having previously considered the place of artworks in the home with a series of “galleries at home” drawings, Guy turns his attention from living spaces to his studio space. The resulting work is a candid sketch of the anxieties of being a young artist, and finding one’s place in the (art) world.

Guy Simpson (b. 1994) lives and works in Cape Town, where he graduated with a degree in Contemporary Art with distinction from the Cape Town Creative Academy in 2019. His work moves between drawing and sculpture, and uses everyday materials like wood, cardboard, pencil and acrylic paint. Characterised by his humorous outlook, Guy's work often draws attention to the more comical side of life. "My process is a very makeshift up-in-the-air kinda thing. A version of the work pops into my mind, and I maybe write it down or sketch it out but really I just kinda jump into it and see what happens."
