Paul Edmunds' work has largely focused on sculpture and print, using materials like bronze, polypropylene, brick clay and skateboard wheels, among many others, to realise his sculptures. In this four-piece series, Edmunds follows the life cycle of the tree as a commodity. These pieces are part of the proto~ Specialised collection, and are made out of fragments and offcuts from the artist’s studio.

These small handcrafted sculptures are made from cord, bronze, and skateboard wheels – materials the artist often returns to. Each piece in the series highlights a phase of the tree's journey as a commodity, from young sapling, to grown tree being harvested, to a pencil made from the wood, and finally to fire and ash that returns to the ground.

In an artist statement, Edmund has said that his work “is characterised by an unconventional use of materials and cumulative processes as well as an ongoing exploration of pattern. On the cusp between abstraction and representation, my work seems more concerned with process than depiction.”
