In all of Sepideh Mehraban’s work, erasure is primary. Born in Tehran, the artist explores the fallibility of memory and historical understanding, using layers of paint and inks to alternatively reveal and conceal her subjects. Taking found newspaper pages written in Farsi as starting prompt, Mehraban considers post-revolutionary Iran and post-apartheid South Africa, questioning the countries' official and unofficial truths through collage, juxtaposition, veiling and unveiling.
This work, Palimpsest V, is a three-layer silkscreen print on Fabriano paper.
