In Galia Gluckman’s I wish I was perfect, painted and recycled paper, tape and plastic are combined on board to create a three-dimensional assemblage that projects off the wall. The bright flash of pink adds to the work’s inviting and touchable surface: reminiscent of Christmas tinsel, or an exotic animal’s fur. Gluckman’s recent work, concerned with the future of parties in the shadow of COVID-19, prompts reflections on bodies in proximity with its tactile qualities; touch being increasingly contentious in times of social distancing.

Originally a fashion designer, Galia previously worked between London and New York before returning to Cape Town to pursue her contemporary art practice. Made from tinsel, ribbon and brightly coloured rope, her most recent work explores the party as metaphor. Though non-figurative, Gluckman’s work belies an eye for fine detail and the subtleties of relationships between bodies in space – a concern that has since become increasingly relevant during the pandemic moment.
