In this series of studio sketches, Guy Simpson uses MDF board and oil pastel to create simple, cartoon-ish 'friends'. Moving between drawing and assemblage, his recent works are composed of shapes cut from board painted and combined in layers to create images that extend out from the wall. This approach lends itself to the artist's graphic aesthetic, with high-contrast colour and humorous subject matter: pushing two-dimensional comic book language into three. In his Friend series, Guy’s drawings and sculptures coincide in objects that resist definition. Their bright outlines and literal titles lend them the status of icon, symbols perhaps for “friendship” or “person”.

Guy Simpson (b. 1994) lives and works in Cape Town, where he graduated with a degree in Contemporary Art with distinction from the Cape Town Creative Academy in 2019. His work moves between drawing and sculpture, and uses everyday materials like wood, cardboard, pencil and acrylic paint. Characterised by his humorous outlook, Guy's work often draws attention to the more comical side of life. "My process is a very makeshift up-in-the-air kinda thing. A version of the work pops into my mind, and I maybe write it down or sketch it out but really I just kinda jump into it and see what happens."
