In Galia Gluckman’s the factor of grouping, the artist uses hand-cut paper and tape to create a sculptural assemblage that resembles, amongst other things, a gestural brushmark, a chopped-off ponytail, or a handful of tinsel carefully gathered and tied up. Alluding to a mathematical concept called 'factorization by grouping', Gluckman’s subtle reframing of the phrase references increased social distancing in the global pandemic, a conceptual touchpoint for her most recent work.

Cape Town. Originally a fashion designer, Galia previously worked between London and New York before returning to Cape Town to pursue her contemporary art practice. Made from tinsel, ribbon and brightly coloured rope, her most recent work explores the party as metaphor. Though non-figurative, Gluckman’s work belies an eye for fine detail and the subtleties of relationships between bodies in space – a concern that has since become increasingly relevant during the pandemic moment.
