In Decayed Shape Earrings, Githan Coopoo mirrors two abstract and fluid shapes, each with a hole in the middle. Paired with the artist’s characteristically monochromatic use of colour, these earrings demonstrate Githan’s ability to transform the modest materials of clay and acrylic into precious jewellery to be worn with care. "By using clay, I’m able to redefine why we consider jewellery to be precious to us," they offer. "If ceramics are mistreated, they will break, and I think there is a beautiful lesson in that. I want my pieces to be able to remind people to be gentle; with themselves, and others”.

Artist and jewellery designer Githan Coopoo works in clay to create unique pieces of poetic import. “I find clay to be a medium that is both uncomplicated and universally timeless. I hope my pieces bring a subtle sense of self-awareness to the wearer – an almost grounding sensation. To adorn the body with a fragile ornament is to make a commitment to sensibility and sensitivity – both powerful and beautiful practices.” Githan graduated from the UCT in 2017 with degrees in English and Art History. He lives and works in Cape Town.
