With accompanying photographs by the late George Hallett, The Forest and the Zoo returns to a 1985 interview between Aryan Kaganof and the jazz legend Johnny ‘Mbizo’ Dyani. An acclaimed bass player, composer and bandleader, Dyani was a founder of the legendary Blue Notes group, with fellow musicians Mongezi Feza, Dudu Pukwana, Nikele Moyake, Chris McGregor and Louis Moholo.
Aryan Kaganof is a South African filmmaker, novelist, poet, and artist. His films include Giant Steps (with Lefifi Tladi and Bra Geoff Mphakati) and SMS Sugarman, one of the first feature filmed using only a cellphone camera.
