Dale Lawrence’s use of media ranges between painting, monotype, linocut, sculpture, installation and performance. This collection of ‘’ are sculptural pieces made up of fragments from Lawrence’s completed linocut works. It forms part of the Specialised collection at proto~. These repurposed materials create pieces that are able to stand apart from the works from which they came, giving new life to scraps that once might have been discarded.
In conversation with SMITH gallery, Lawrence explained his process of reworking ideas and methods, saying, “I was interested in the moment the works actually become new; whether the lack of so-called ‘original' input – the labour, the sacrifice, the creation that was involved the first time – lessened the result or made something new and credible of its own.”
