From the publisher:

"As a modest contribution to the existing literature on the subject, the Stellenbosch Museum presents this book – a survey of styles prevalent in chairs made at the Cape of Good Hope from the time of the first European settlement in 1652 to the middle of the nineteenth century. Richly illustrated with 96 photographs (10 full-page) and several diagrams, it is hoped that this work will become a useful reference book for the collector and student. It sets out clearly the different characteristics of each style and describes further development.

For this publication, Hans Fransen (former curator of the Stellenbosch Museum) has revised and extensively augmented the text of the catalogue for the exhibition 'The Cape Chair,' which was held at the Museum in April 1969."
