Under apartheid, music – like much else – was segregated, and black musicians struggled to find recognition in South Africa equal to that of their white counterparts. Often celebrated overseas (as was the case with Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba), their music more often communicated the realities of life under apartheid to the outside world. As such, it proved a potent subject for Jürgen Schadeberg, whose collection of portraits featuring jazz, swing and blues musicians taken over sixty years is reproduced here.

The photographer Jürgen Schadeberg (b.1931, Berlin) was instrumental in covering the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. As the picture editor and chief photographer for Drum magazine, the leading South African publication reporting on black issues and figures, he covered many of the significant events in the country’s history, winning the trust and respect of Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress. He died in 2020.
