From the introduction:

"The lack of consensus concerning art often bewilders the interested beginner. 'Surely,' he claims, 'there must be certain norms upon which you can base the study of art?' There are, but at the same time, the response to art is individual. The norms help to formulate and explain that response. The beginners, however, want to know what it is that they must look for in art and how to judge it. This book has been written to serve as a guide to art appreciation and art historical study.

Through the course of this book, we will look at various aspects of art. We will discuss the most obvious constituents first, digress from time to time to consider related issues, and ponder over aesthetic ideas as they present themselves. By these means I hope to show the way to further independent study and research."
