From the publisher:

“Sol Plaatjie’s Mhudi is the story of the love of a refugee and her husband as they wander through the South African social and physical landscape of the mid1800s. It recounts the Matabele’s bellicose incursions into central southern Africa and the military alliance that the Tswana people formed with the Boer Voortrekkers to defeat them. Written between 1919 and 1920, Mhudi is the first novel written in English by a black African. It has become one of the cornerstones of South African literature.”
