Excerpt from the book preface:
Gohlke's photographs are arresting, elegant and sophisticated contemporary landscapes. Traveling the prairies of the mid-section of the United States, the mountainous forests of the Pacific Northwest and, more recently, central Europe, Gohlke has orchestrated volumes of geographical space into precise, formal delineations of the land. His vision is one of clarity, precise description and documentation. Although he photographs with apparent neutrality, Gohlke makes his images as an emotional response, and they thus lend themselves to metaphoric investigation.
