Her photographs recall the work of Wolfgang Tillmans in a very personal diary (of a place). Janssen travels frequently to Prince Albert, South Africa, to the middle of the Great Karoo – an ancient seabed formed millions of years ago. It is this severe dry landscape that Janssen explores with her camera and upon which she projects stark portraits of local young people. Indeed, it is the balance between fresh, young lives and unspoiled and harsh nature that lends this body of work a highly contemplative feel. Cuny Janssen (b.1975) completed her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Utrecht and later worked as an intern for Thomas Struth in Düsseldorf, Germany. Since 2000, Cuny has travelled around the world making portraits of children in their everyday environments and picturing the landscapes that surround them. She exclusively works in colour, capturing fleeting moments with the slow medium of an analogue 4x5-inch plate camera (a contradiction her practice remains alive to). Her collected images extend impressions and expression of diverse places and their people. Cuny lives and works in Amsterdam.
