"Jurgen Schadeberg was born in Berlin in 1931. In 1950 he immigrated to South Africa and became Chief Photographer, Picture Editor and Art Director on Drum magazine. During the 1950s he photographed pivotal moments in the lives of South Africans. These photographs represent the life and struggle of South Africans under apartheid. In 1964 Jurgen left South Africa for Europe, and worked for many years as a photojournalist, filmmaker and educator. He has exhibited widely, and has published numerous photographic books.
