PARTY / ART / SEX

BOTTLED AROMATHERAPY EXPERIENCES. THE DISTILLED ESSENCE OF CLUB-KID HEDONISM. MADE FOR THE AGE OF ISOLATION. A LOVE LETTER TO THE DANCE FLOOR, TO PARTY AND PLAY, TO THE NIGHT.

Confronted by an unprecedented moment where social isolation is fundamental to our survival, my response as a live artist and creator of lived experience is to attempt to continue the work of imagining utopia through ways other than social interaction and world-building. I arrive at the most intrinsic of human instinct; the senses. In particular, scent. Scent has strange power and capacity to ignite all the other senses in its wake; it conjures memory, triggers emotion, and instigates physical reaction. By playing with the idea of scent as experience-maker, I look to create a sort of aromatherapy for the club kid in isolation. Bottled memories of familiar scenarios which, when inhaled, allow the body to return to spaces it can no longer inhabit: the night club, the bathhouse, the theatre. These are spaces that, for me, have formed the foundation of my practice and my imagining of utopian futures presented in my work as DJ, live artist and club promoter for The Death of Glitter movement.

Distilled into three distinct aroma experiences presented in empty poppers bottles used by myself during party and/or play, conjuring the spirit of club-kid hedonism and nights spent under strobe lights, with each scent lingers the ghosts of the worlds I have created.

PARTY – WITH NOTES OF GINSENG, CIGARETTES AND THE EVOL DANCE FLOOR. TO GET THE CLUB KIDS LIT AND READY TO CHANGE THE WORLD THROUGH THE RADICAL ACT OF PARTY. FOR THE HEDONISTS, REMEMBERING A REVOLUTION FOUGHT ON THE DANCEFLOOR.

ART – WITH NOTES OF ROSE, BLOOD AND REBELLION. TO INSPIRE THE RADICAL CREATIVE SOUL WITHIN AND IGNITE RADICAL ACTS OF SELF-EXPRESSION.

SEX – WITH NOTES OF YLANG YLANG, MY COLOGNE, SWEAT AND LUBE. TO UNLEASH YOUR INNER FEMME DOM QUEEN BITCH AND LOSE YOURSELF IN THE PLEASURE OF EROTIC EXCESS.

Founder of The Death of GLITTER, a queer nightlife happening in the Mother City, Tazmé Pillay is a Durban-born artist, drag performer and DJ. Preoccupied with the complexities of social currency, and drawn to the ephemerality of experience, Tazmé’s work considers “the politics of underground or alternative spaces, particularly the nightclub, which for me becomes an alternative theatre and a laboratory for the exploration of self-curation and performativity. In my personal practice, I challenge codes of masculinity and gender with reckless gay abandon as the self-professed mother of the new Club Kids.” Tazmé lives and works in Cape Town.
