Fanie Buys’ deeply textured and boldly coloured celebrity portrait paintings are marked by a sense of a humour that is simultaneously playful and eerie. In Unintentional Hugh Grant Birthday Cake and Prince George Mirror Fragment, Buys introduces artist clay to his practice, combining it with his characteristic style of portraiture to create textured framed cakes that are almost sculptural.
