From the publisher's text:

"Jo Ractliffe is a practising artist, working with photo-based media, video and installation. She was born in Cape Town and completed her B.A.FA. (with distinction in Photography and M.F.A. with distinction) degrees at the University of Cape Town. She taught in the Fine Arts Departments at Stellenbosch University and UCT between 1985 and 1991 and in 1991 took up a post at the Department of Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she teaches studio practice and theory. She has held three solo exhibitions and her work has been selected for several critically acclaimed group exhibitions in South Africa and abroad. In 1999 she was the recipient of the 1999 Vita Art Prize, awarded for the multi-screen video installation, Love, Death, Sacrifice and so forth. Ractliffe lives and works in Johannesburg.

Taxi is a series of titles on contemporary South African artists, initiated in 1999 by the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and published by David Krut Publishing. The series aims to extend the profile of South African artists both locally and abroad, and in collaboration with the MTN Art Institute, to develop an active educational programme and teaching resource archive."
