From the introduction:
"It was suggested by a friend, "keep it visual man," people don't read photographic magazines. I must agree. There have been a lot of questions posed about the motivation for launching a new magazine. The long and the short of it is—we love photography and publishing. It has been more than three years in coming, and with much refinement, we now have snapped, our themed quarterly on African photography. Taking on migration as the theme for our launch issue and the compilation of the 48-page portfolio exploring that pressing issue presented many challenges. Nevertheless, the individual photographers, having pointedly dealt with the topic, and their generous contribution to snapped has helped us tremendously. With an estimated 20–50 million migrants across the African continent, migration affects the day-to-day lives of us all. From daily travel to the flight of millions displaced by violence, poverty, and natural disasters, migration has wide-ranging consequences. We express our thanks to the contributors: Guy Tillim for the cover image; Boniface Mwangi and Greg Marinovich for their news essays; Greg Marinovich, Pieter Hugo, Jodi Bieber, David Goldblatt, Andrew Tshabangu, David Southwood, and Amaize Ojeikere for the migration portfolio; and Koto Bolofo for the fashion-inspired pages. Their great work has made our task so much easier. There are the important issues, but for us at snapped, it is also about the photographs and design. The launch issue sets a benchmark for quality and world-class content—one which we will strive to continue to bring to you."
